Product Description - Golden Gate
Peperomias are herbs of tropical and subtropical regions. Most of them occur in Central and Northern South America. Fewer species are known from Africa, Asia, and Oceania. Different endemic species are known from the islands of the Indian Ocean, the Pacific, and the Caribbean. Although a lot of Peperomias grow as epiphytes in rainforest habitats, others are succulents found in the high Andes. The etymology of the name Peperomia is based on the resemblance of its flower to Piper. The Greek translation of peper-omos means "pepper alike". The genus Peperomia includes over 1500 species of which only a few are cultivated extensively. They vary considerably in appearance.Peperomias are widely used in dish gardens, bottle gardens and other environments where space is limited. They are slow growing, compact, and some species produce curious 'rat tail' flower heads made up of tiny greenish flowers on an upright spike. Peperomias can be used in any number of different ways, depending on the species and variety--as a pot plant, in terrariums, as small indoor shrubs, hanging baskets, and in some cases, complementing floral arrangements. The most widely produced species is Peperomia obtusifolia Oval-leaf Peperomia (Columbiana, Golden Gate) and its cultivars. Oval-leaf Peperomia is an upright sprawling plant with dark green, glossy, nearly-oval-shaped leaves. Peperomia obtusifolia `Variegata' (Golden Gate), or Variegated Oval-Leaf Peperomia has leaves with a border of creamy white and a central zone of dark green and grayish green. Peperomia caperata varieties (Ripple, Autumn, Beatle, Suzanne) with their rosette growth habits have dark green leaves with deep creases along with major veins, giving the leaves a wrinkled appearance. Petioles are reddish and relatively long. The green Peperomia caperata 'Emerald Ripple' is probably closest to the original habit.
Plant CareCare is basically identical for each peperomia species. Place your plant in bright filtered light and water when the surface of the soil is dry to the touch. Feed monthly with a balanced liquid fertilizer. The remarkable increase in popularity of Peperomia is due to several reasons; it is easy to grow, it is of lasting beauty and does not require special care; and it is tolerant to varying temperatures, light conditions, crowding, and requires no special soil. Also, it can grow without strict regimes of fertilizing and watering and it is easily propagated. In general, however, lovers of Peperomias as house plants might consider the following conditions for their care and growth, which may vary in some degree with different species: bright light, indirect or filtered; almost any soil type which allows for good drainage; any complete houseplant fertilizer every 6 to 8 weeks, but less often in winter; temperature around 70 ; and watering around every 3 to 4 days, allowing the soil to dry out slightly before watering. Peperomias are relatively free from disease, but the diseases of importance are crown rot incited by Phytophthora parasitica, edema, ring-spot, and southern blight.
