Product Description - Red Star
The bromeliads known as Earth Stars derive their name from the star like spread of their flat, oddly marked leaves with flowers blooming from the center of the foliage. The plants listed bear white blossoms in summer and differ mainly in leaf color. C. bivittatus has bronze-green leaves with lengthwise white stripes; C. fosteriana has chocolate-brown leaves with zebra like gray stripes; the hybrid It is dull green with orange-pink and cream stripes; and C. zonatus zebrinus has reddish brown leaves with zigzag silvery bands. All of them spread about a foot or more except C. bivittatus, which grows only 4 to 6 inches across.Plant Care
Cryptanthus, or Earth Stars, flourish in bright indirect or curtain-filtered sunlight, night temperatures of 60 to 65 degrees and day temperatures of 70 degrees or higher. Plant in a mixture of 2 parts peat moss to 1 part packaged potting soil and 1 part sharp sand or perlite, but do not add lime. Allow the mixture to dry slightly between watering and fertilize monthly from mid-spring through early fall. Propagate from shoots that appear at the base of the plant between the leaves. Cryptanthus are generally pest free.0 Comment
