Product Description - Columnea

These plants occur throughout tropical America. Columneas produce brilliant flowers along their stems giving a very exotic effect. A minimum temperature of 10 C (50 F) is required and a humid atmosphere in a bright position out of full sun. Keep them on the dry side during winter. The common name is the goldfish plant. All Columneas make exceptional basket plants.

Plant Care

Columneas grow as epiphytic plants in the wild throughout tropical America and require bright light, good air circulation, and a well-drained growing medium. They are very tolerant of underpotting and seem to bloom best when potbound. Columnea make nice hanging basket plants. South and west windows are best for compact growth. Requirements for artificial lighting is 12 to 14 hours daily. Baskets may be grown outdoors in shaded areas during the summer.

Let soil become slightly dry between waterings. Keep them on the dry side during winter. In general these plants do best with a light watering hand. Avoid wetting foliage when not in active growth, less watering for 6-8 weeks often stimulates best flowering  Use a light porous potting mix. Feed plants regularly at moderate rate, using a well balanced fertilizer, at 1/4 tsp. per gallon of water, with every watering. Fertilizer may be increased to 1/2 to 1 full tsp. per gallon of water during spring and summer, when plants are actively growing, depending upon the size of the plant. (Larger plants can handle more fertilizer.) Columnea plants can be easily propagated from stem or tip cuttings, especially in spring. Other than an occasional shower to remove any dust, columnea don't often need any special attention. If they begin to look a bit open and scraggly, pinch them back and they will fill back in.
