Product Description - Pink Charming
Rex Begonias are among the most handsome begonias, grown for their beautifully colored leaves rather than their flowers. The heart-shaped leaves can be up to 11 inches in length, with striking patterns in variations of red, black, silver and green with a rippled or pimpled surface. They grow to approximately 12 inches in height and 18 inches in width. The Begonia was named for the Frenchman Michel Begon, a patron of botany.Plant Care
The Begonias grow best in bright indirect or curtain-filtered sunlight all year round. They will benefit greatly if they are given four or more hours a day of direct sunlight from mid-autumn through mid-winter in areas north of the 38th parallel; if only artificial light is available, provide at least 400 foot-candles. Night temperatures of 60 to 65 degrees and day temperatures of 70 to 75 degrees are ideal.Begonias cannot tolerate wetness, so keep the soil barely moist, and err on the side of under-watering; wilted plants recover when watered but over-watered plants die. Fertilize established plants at two-month intervals from mid-winter until late fall with standard house-plant fertilizer diluted to half its recommended minimum strength. Do not feed them the rest of the year, and wait at least two months before feeding newly potted plants.
Overcrowded begonias can be repotted at any season, but spring is preferred. Use a packaged general-purpose potting soil. Because begonias have shallow roots and spread as they grow, they are most attractive in squat pots one-half to three-fourths as tall as they are wide. All begonias can be propagated from stem cuttings at any season. Rex Begonias can also be propagated at any time from leaf cuttings, and rhizomatous begonias, as well as Rex Begonias or basket begonias that grow from rhizomes, can be propagated by division of the rhizomes in spring or fall. They are generally pest free.
