Some people talk to their house plants. In fact, some contend their
plants will cringe if they are scolded. There is no
evidence that a house plant ever talked back, but if one is feeling poorly
it has its own ways of letting you know what is wrong. The leaves may
droop, spots may appear, growth may stop. One symptom may mean a plant
is getting too little light, another too much water, a third that mealy
bugs are attacking. A quick, accurate diagnosis is half the battle in
controlling the problem before it gets out of hand.
Following are 12 signs that indicate house-plant
trouble. A diagnosis and cure for each are also given,
but keep in mind that your house is not a plant hospital; discard plants
that are obviously in bad shape and replace them with fresh, healthy
ones. To forestall problems, keep a close watch on your plants and at
the earliest signs of distress, change the conditions as described below.
